Junius Austin, Henry Pigott, Fowler O'Neal
Captain Junius Austin
The Austin family knows Portsmouth Island.
Junius Austin, Rudy and Donaldís father, was the caretaker of the Portsmouth Island Lifesaving Station in the 1950s and 1960s. At this time the building housed a hunting and fishing club. Junius Austin ran boat trips from Ocracoke harbor to Portsmouth Island on his boat, the Orion. This is how the Austin family, Junius and his sons got to know and admire Portsmouth Island and itís people.
The last residents of Portsmouth Island left in 1971. In 1976 the National Park Service made Portsmouth Island part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
In the 1970s Rudy Austin began a boat tour to Portsmouth Island. Donald Austin joined his brother in business in the 1990s. The brothers both have thirty plus years of experience with the NC DOT ferry division as licensed ferry captains.
Today youíll find Rudy and Donald Austin at the Community docks on Ocracoke Harbor ready to take you for your Portsmouth Island trip. They look forward to sharing with you their family stories and knowledge of Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands.
